What to have ready when you call
- Your address or the nearest cross streets.
- The type of heater tank or tankless, gas or electric.
- Where the water is top, bottom, a valve, a pipe or the tank itself.
- Whether it is shut off and whether you smell gas.
If the leak is active, close the cold-water valve above the heater and turn off the gas or power before you call. Our emergency steps explain how. If you smell gas, leave the home and call SoCalGas or 911 from outside.
What happens after you call
Your call is connected to an independent plumbing provider who serves your area. They will ask a few questions about the leak, confirm when they can come out and explain how they price the visit and the repair. Feel free to ask about their license, warranty and estimate before agreeing to any work. Once they arrive, they find the source of the leak and tell you whether it needs a part, such as a valve or connector, or a new water heater.
